Book NowWhat is bibliotherapy?
Bibliotherapy is a non-clinical, developmental intervention that promotes connectedness and wellbeing through guided reading groups.
How Women Benefit from Bibliotherapy
In non-clinical group bibliotherapy sessions, participants can enjoy a healthy distraction for an hour or two, allowing themselves to learn, laugh, and connect with others.
During the session, the facilitator reads a variety of texts centred on a theme, and participants have the option to join the conversation or simply listen as others share their thoughts.
The positive atmosphere, coupled with the opportunity to focus on engaging readings and discussions, fosters a sense of well-being and can strengthen participants' resilience and hopefulness even in challenging times.
Prose Sample
The selected prose comes from a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and memoirs, such as this excerpt from Educated by Tara Westover. The goal of the reading is to inspire conversation, self-reflection, and the exchange of ideas. Through these discussions, women may gain insights from one another or from the text itself. Discussions and learning opportunities from this sample may include exploring who the mentioned authors are, debating whether participants agree with the statements made, or examining a different perspective.
Poetry Sample
The selected poems are drawn from poets across various decades and centuries. Featuring voices that resonate with women, the collection includes works by writers such as rupi kaur, Najwa Zebian, and Nikita Gill, among others. The meaning and interpretation of poetry are shaped by its audience, a concept beautifully captured in a quote by Jorge Luis Borges: "The moment a book is finished, it begins to belong to the reader, not the writer." Although Borges was referring to books, this idea extends to all creative works, including poetry. Many women are pleasantly surprised to discover an unexpected interest in poetry after participating in bibliotherapy sessions.

Wonderful Program
We have been so fortunate at SafeHope Home to have Kimberley Black deliver a wonderful program biweekly called Bibliotherapy. Kimberley seems to know exactly how to respond to our women in the trauma program, and they always excited to see her back. Her approach is gentle, relaxed, and ever so kind. She brings a great range of knowledge, humour, and an energetic personality to her work. I was so inspired by her work; I took her training on bibliotherapy myself. Keep up the good work Kimberley, the world needs you.

Unique and Beneficial
Bibliotherapy has been a unique and beneficial addition to our Life Skills programming here at the YWCA Durham, and Kimberley’s love of literature has greatly impacted the lives of the women we serve. Her open and engaging nature has drawn them to her groups repeatedly, fostering an environment of honest reflection, deep thought, and needed connection. Who she is, and the experiences she has lived give her a perspective women both respect and connect with. Our women look forward to her monthly workshops and are always eager to participate in any topic.
